Our services

Arthur D. Little has been a pioneer in safety and risk management for over a century - highlighted by numerous landmark assignments.

Today, we have deeper insight and broader capability in this field than any other leading strategy consulting firm. Uniquely, we can provide in-house teams combining business and commercial acumen with specialist expertise and knowledge in areas such as safety critical systems, transport risk, safety culture and process safety. We work across a wide range of industries and public sector organizations.

Our Risk & Safety services cover five key areas.

Strengthening Risk and Safety Management

Managing risk and safety is complex, given the uncertainties in determining appropriate risk management interventions to prevent harm, which may be severe with significant impact on an organization.  Whatever the level of uncertainty, we can maximize returns from proper risk and safety management.

Our expertise includes:

  • Corporate-wide review of risk management systems that include leadership; governance arrangements; and suitability of global company standards.  We work side-by-side with client stakeholders to develop the most appropriate risk management plans and reduce risk management costs.
  • Assessment of current risk management arrangements, using our comprehensive diagnostic tools to improve performance.
  • Benchmarking of management arrangements and performance, to help secure investment and strengthen regulator confidence.
  • Assessment and development of safety culture including Unwritten Rules of the Game.  We know through experience that culture is critical – but organizations have one culture that is supportive of safety or not, not separate cultures for safety, quality, finance etc.  We have robust, proven approaches for diagnosing and reporting on the cultural barriers and enablers to strengthened performance.  Our tools include employee surveys, focus groups and senior management interview protocols which our experienced staff know how to use effectively.
  • Project risk management: we can help develop a clear strategy to manage and mitigate project risk; assess intangible social risks during project feasibility studies and build trust with regulatory bodies and stakeholders.
  • Safety development programs; helping deliver cultural change in safety leadership, and prioritizing improvements in safety management resulting in improved performance

Risk Assessment and Modeling

We have over 20 years industrial expertise in the assessment of risk for transport, chemical process and oil & gas sectors.  We have led hazard and risk assessment studies in the oil & gas, petrochemical and transportation sectors on projects ranging from initial concept assessment, project Front End Engineering Design (FEED) and Engineering Procurement Construction (EPC), project debottlenecking and expansion.  Our approach is focused on delivering value from risk assessment and risk modeling by helping our clients to focus on what really has an impact on performance.

Our expertise includes:

  • Hazard and risk assessments of asset design, operational, inspection and maintenance activities, to support early identification and assessment of the critical hazards.
  • Design of risk models to better understand complex and multivariable systems and inform business decisions
  • Improvement of workplace risk assessment procedures, risk management processes and metrics for risk reporting

Strengthening Senior Management Competence

We work with Board and Executive-level members to build senior competence in leadership and strategic management of competence.  Our competence development programs are delivered by senior consulting staff, all of whom have substantial international experience in delivering assignments similar to the case studies used within our programs.  Program delivery is achieved through demonstrating the importance of safety as a key business issue; and developing the understanding that typical strategic approaches can be applied to solving good management.

Our expertise includes:

  • Strategic Safety Management for senior executives
  • Functional safety management to develop managers’ competence in areas including risk assessment tools and principles; process safety management; accident and incident investigation skills; audit skills and system design

Assuring Safety Critical Systems

We have been assessing safety critical systems in the rail sector for more than 20 years and have developed much of the original methodology and techniques used in such work.  The services we provide help companies demonstrate that regulatory requirements (e.g.  European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization – CENELEC – standards compliance) have been satisfied and that the supplier has an appropriate risk management system in place.  We believe that our experience helps the pragmatic assessment of particular design considerations – especially when solutions may differ from those typically found within the industry. The expertise that we have developed over the years is particularly valued by our clients, as well as the fact that we are able to bring to bear experience from a range of sectors.  Our teams are involved in projects in many parts of the world, with current and recent activities involving time in North America, Hong Kong, Brazil and Japan among other locations.

Our expertise includes:

  • Independent safety assurance of trackside and trainbourne safety critical systems
  • Technology migration strategies to help minimize whole project costs; minimize the risks of service disruption and ensure safety is maintained
  • Pre-tender evaluation to help identify the commercial and safety risks of a given technology and the likelihood within which it will attain safety approval

Safety Development Programs

We work with clients to build their Safety Development Programs, pulling together elements such as leader safety competence, program management, and standards development to drive a cultural change in safety leadership, safety management and performance.  We typically work with the Chief Executive and/or Group Safety Director, pulling together new and existing elements into a packaged program that allows the single most important ingredient – leadership commitment – to be secured via competence development programs.  We then develop frameworks against which progress against targets can be rigorously checked.

Development and delivery of bespoke training

Arthur D. Little has more than 25 years of experience developing and delivering high quality training for senior managers.  We have a range of open enrolment and bespoke courses covering topics such as safety leadership, strategic safety management and accident investigation.  Our training courses are delivered by highly experienced consulting staff.  We are always happy to share feedback from past courses as our clients can tell you how they found the courses engaging, linked to their own concerns or issues about risk and made a real difference to their leadership of safety.
