Marc de Pater

Marc is a Principal based in the Amsterdam office. He is a core member of ADL’s Chemicals Practice and a member of the Strategy & Organization Practice. Marc focuses on the chemicals, materials and feed & food industries. 

Marc is a functional expert in:

  • (Commercial) strategy development and implementation (planning and execution)
  • Product & business development strategy

Before joining Arthur D. Little, Marc spent 25 years in the chemicals and related industries, in which he held a variety of marketing, sales and innovation roles at companies such as BASF, Cargill, ICI, Kraton, Shell and Synthomer, at director and VP level. Marc has worked extensively in the US and Asia, notably Japan and China, and lived in the UK for about six years.

Marc holds an MSc in chemistry and has completed several executive education courses (i.a. at Wharton). He is fluent in Dutch and English and speaks conversational German. In addition to his work at Arthur D. Little, Marc is an advisor to two start-ups, one in the UK (catalysts) and the other in the Netherlands (home decoration). Marc lives with his partner in a leafy part of the Netherlands, and enjoys playing golf, hiking and cooking in his spare time.

Despite an impressive record of value creation and its central importance to meeting mankind’s future “mega-needs”, the chemicals industry is undervalued by investors, which holds back its strategic freedom to grow. Focusing on four key trends to power transformation, this article looks at how this challenge can be overcome by embracing convergence, through lessons that can also be applied to other high- capital-investment, asset-heavy industries.
